The Haze is Here

From an undisclosed safe location, Betsy Bass is back with the news. First and foremost, I must apologize for the lack of a newspaper after the last meet. The haze prevented not only myself from seeking information, but others from bringing it to me. As time went on, we have found a new system that works. And I must say, this system did work. Grab your gas masks and get ready for a lot of news.

The Big Story

It is quite obvious if you’ve been anywhere within The Fold over the past month. The haze. It’s thick. It’s green. It’s making people sick. It’s causing visions. It’s spreading. It’s a mystery that’s stumped every last scientist, researcher, and town-approved genius for miles. The stronger it gets, the less outside help we’ve been seeing. One would imagine this would be the chance of a lifetime for someone to find the breakout cure. Instead, it seems to have caused fear amongst outsiders. In a time of need, is there anyone out there brave enough to step up to the task before The Fold, and the people inside, are lost forever.

Consequences

Outside of our own health, there have already been other consequences of this haze. Reports of glowing animals have come in. Surprisingly, this has not caught the attention of the Bloodhounds. The poachers allegedly have become diseased from the haze and have started targeting cabins. Any bit of humanity they had appears to be gone.

Other reports have come in that abberents have been going missing. The connection between the haze heavily affecting abberents , and them going missing is too big for me to consider a coincidence. I do have my own question though: Why?

Local families, without the capital ‘F’

(And one with the F)

The Volkovs have moved their family holiday into October to accommodate Requiem’s change in schedule. They invite the town to join them for The Burning on Saturday night at 9pm outside the Great Hall.

Families, groups, towns, there’s been a lot of commotion within the fold. Families come in all shapes and sizes, as someone recently described it to me.

Fort Grim, as many of you are familiar with if you’ve been to the recent gather or read my last newsletter, is nothing but a town of scraps now. To the untrained eye, you could say that Fort Grim has been picked clean, but to the scavengers and vultures of the wastes, there is always something to be found.

The Saintbane Sentinels had a deadly clash with some Fallows. Unconfirmed rumors suggest that the Captain may have been killed.

Oh Baudelaires, it’s always something with them. Sage Baudelaire didn’t make it very far after his belated Honor’s Fall attempt. In the words of his son, Olaf, gathered during an exclusive interview, “Sage Baudelaire was slain by a terrible, unknown, but not suspicious, assailant on their way home”. Olaf has been elected as the new, and only remaining elder of the family. “I promise, without any shady motives, that I will be a staunch, and great, and forever loyal ally to Requiem. As long as they are also a forever ally to us, the Baudelaires. May all your drinks never be poisoned.” All said with the largest of grins.

Strangers, critters, and sales

It’s yard sale season in The Fold as dozens flee their homes and sell off their belongings. Keep your eyes out for merchants, and maybe ask them if that’s their stuff they’re selling.

The Stevensons will also be in town selling supplies to keep you all alive during through the Haze. Be sure to thank them for their kindness.

We’ve all heard many types of deals, particularly if you’re a rover, but this may be a new one to all of us. If anyone knows what this means, do let me know. “Never heard of a deal like this before. Come get a pickle for a nickel”

The Requiem Fighting League will be hosting tryouts this month. Join them Saturday 4-5 to become a part of the league and maybe have a chance to take on Ultimo Blue!

Some concerns over the wellbeing of the animals, besides some of them glowing, have been growing. Winter will be coming quickly, critters like the racossums should be busy preparing, but nobody has seen them. There has been fur spotted in the water and washing up on the shores, but without having seen it myself, I can not confirm if this is racossum fur, or another creature. I can only hope their fate was not the same as the cattle at a nearby farmstead. In my brief chance to speak with the owner, he described what happened like so, “as if it ripped all the flesh off the bones”. The family is in need of help to relocate, they say the blood on the trails has frightened them from traveling.

There have been a few encounters of a faithful group coming to assist in finding a ‘higher purpose’. They say they are not preaching, just looking to help. Inconsistent reports of the faith have prevented me from sharing which they belong to.

I have gotten my hands on the most peculiar note, and while it could be musings of a very imaginative child, it could be something far sinister. I feel it is my duty to still share, regardless who the author may be. “Raise your hand if you’ve ever been scared, raise your hand if you weren’t prepared. Raise your hand if you’ve ever lied, raise your hand to see who’s died?”

That’s It

With everything going on, expect people to go to the extreme to protect themselves. Be sure to watch your step. You never know what small move can change your life.
