Character versus Character (CvC) conflict is a core part of the Dystopia Rising New York (DRNY) experience. Please refer to these guidelines for DRNY specific information.

The Wasteland

Dystopia Rising New York is primarily Wasteland. The following areas are not Wasteland:

  • Medical Sleep

  • Personal tents unless the player creates a sign to mark it as Wasteland

  • The line for the Post Office

  • Locations engaged in Parley (see below)

Sleeping areas are, by default, Wasteland.

In the Wasteland, a player does not need to check in prior to initiating CvC. However, a player may still “thumbs down” conflict; if the thumbs down hand gesture is given, CvC should cease. Use of the Parley mechanic is encouraged, either with or without the thumbs down mechanic. While a guide is not required for CvC in the Wasteland, it is strongly encouraged.

Parley

Parley is a unique mechanic that a player can use to negotiate CvC. If a player requests “Parley” the other player should agree and they both should report to ops. The staff will assign a guide to act as an NPC mediator so that CvC negotiations can be held in character, and CvC will be on hold until the Parley is over. Parley exists as an in-character alternative to out-of-character negotiations and the Conflict Check-In, not as a replacement.

The Survival Ethos System

The Survial Ethos System (SES) is an out-of-character list of players who have opted into “no quarter” CvC. By putting their name on the list, they agree that they accept any and all CvC actions against their characters, without limitation. Another player can engage in violence or theft against them anywhere, at any time, without check-in or negotiation. Some key points of the SES.

  • Players should put their player number and character name on the list when registering. If registering multiple characters, use a separate line for each.

  • The list of players registered in the SES will be kept in Ops.

  • A player may use the word “registered” to signal they’re in the SES.

  • Once registered in the SES, a character remains in it until the player opts out.

  • A player may opt in to the SES at any time, but may only opt out at the beginning of the event, after infection loss, or if they “thumbs down” a CvC conflict.

  • If a player on the SES “thumbs down” a CvC conflict, they should go out-of-character and check-in with ops. They will be taken off the SES and have to submit an action request to register again. There is no penalty for doing so, except that they may not participate in the Red Ledger or benefit from Master Society Membership in their Family.

The Red Ledger

The Red Ledger is an in-character organization that requires the character to be registered in the SES. Every character in the Red Ledger is in the SES, but not every character in the SES is part of the Red Ledger. The Red Ledger offers plot opportunities focused around CvC and may have unique benefits and rewards. You can read more about the Red Ledger here.
